What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is the use of exercises in the water to help with the rehabilitation of a condition.
As the weather warms up more people are starting to get back into the water to get their regular exercise. Some are braving the ocean and outdoor pools while some have kept up their pool-based exercise in the heated pools around Coffs Harbour.
While many use water as an addition to their exercise regime some people rely on it as their only form of exercise. With both of these groups in mind it is worth looking at the research behind Hydrotherapy and it’s many benefits.
Many studies have compared pool-based exercise with no exercise and obviously pool-based exercise comes out on top with decreased pain, increased movement, increased quality of life and increased function. However, how does it fare when compared to land-based exercise? A systematic review of this found that, in people with musculoskeletal conditions, pool-based exercise and land-based exercise both decreased pain, increased function and increased quality of life. The interesting finding was that there was no significant difference between the land-based groups and the pool-based groups.
The first finding, while obvious, is great. This means that people who are unable to exercise on land due to pain will benefit from exercise in the water.
The second finding is also important because it indicates that pool-based exercise is just as good as land-based at managing pain and impairments. This is good for people who find some exercises too painful on land. Performing the exercise in the pool will help the person improve until they get to a point where they can complete the exercise on land again.
At Hoys, each client is treated individually. In some instances pool-based exercise may not be necessary. In others it may be the only form of safe exercise.
